TO THE OTHER SIDE

I'm leaving, I'm leaving. Tight and with arms outstretched, like a moth to a lamppost, I see my Life parade dazzled following a thin ray of light that sneaks through the cracks of the modest pine box.

Without saying a word, those who knew me take me to the cemetery. Split open, the earth awaits me to accept me again in its womb. I have paid my tribute. Charon is waiting for me in his boat to cross me to the other side.

Image of a funeral procession taken somewhere in the town of Maricao during the 1930s.

THE VIRTUES OF RUM

That is very clear to me in my memory. We had met that morning to discuss important issues as usual. I remember that day we chatted amiably about the uses and virtues of fermenting cane. I remember that we even made a list listing all the medicinal properties of alcohol. That if alcohol is astringent, that it serves as a mood restorative, that if it cleanses inside, that it beautifies, gives courage and is a hair tonic. In conclusion, alcohol is very good for many things.

We were about to end the meeting, but as always happens in conversations between friends, there is never a lack of jokers who lend themselves to grace with the sole purpose of watching the World burn. I don't know who it was, or how he did it, but the truth is that in the midst of everyone, a bottle of rum appeared uncovered.

That's not fair. It's not worth it. That's the last thing I remember. I felt how my vision clouded over and the voices of my friends faded little by little. I don't know how I did it. I don't know how I got there, but I woke up without shoes and with my shirt open on the sofa in my house.

FROM CASTAÑER TO MAYAGUEZ

From among a sea of curves and as if rescued from the ether, an image of the already extinct and at the time known as the "Big Bus". Public transport vehicle driven by Mr. Lencho Flores, who in times of great need provided transportation service to mountain dwellers between Castañer de Lares, sectors of Maricao and the town of Mayagüez.

This wonderful photo was taken at the beginning of the '30s, during one of his regular weekly routes, near the old church "Santa Margarita" in the "Nicolás Cuevas" sector of the Bucarabones neighborhood of the town of Maricao.
